Covid Survival Guide: What you should do if you want to get yourself tested

As the deadly coronavirus sweeps over the nation, the Indian Centre for Medical Research (ICMR) has been working to test more and more people for the presence of the virus.

Till now, ICMR had only been conducting tests on symptomatic patients. India’s apex medical body intensified random sampling last week, including people who display flu-like symptoms but don’t have any history of travel to outbreak zones to determine whether community transmission is taking place.

In a notification issued on March 20th, ICMR said that asymptomatic individuals who have traveled internationally in the last 2 weeks should stay in home quarantine for 14 days, and that they will be tested only if they become symptomatic (symptoms include fever, cough, difficulty in breathing). All family members living with a confirmed case should be home quarantined too, according to guideline.

If you feel that you may be exposed to the virus, or you’re already showing symptoms of the virus, here is what you can do to get yourself tested.

What you should do if you want to get tested
In case you feel that you may have contracted the virus, call Union health ministry’s 24X7 helpline number: 01123978046.

You can also mail your queries at ncov2019@gmail.com.

The district surveillance officer will visit you and, if the chances of infection are high, you may be transported to a designated hospital for the test. The government has allotted separate ambulances for transporting suspected cases. Use of public transport isn’t advised.
